NEWS June 2026

Some not-so-gentle reminders
1. Please ensure that you always bring proof of membership when you go fishing. The latest version of the Clubmate app allows our bailiffs to check your membership even when there’s no phone signal.
2. We realise that the Rules and Constitution section of the website makes for a long read so we’d like to remind members of the following key rules.
1. NO BARBED HOOKS, EVER. MICRO-BARBED HOOKS ARE ALLOWED
2. NO BOLT RIGS OF ANY DESCRIPTION
3. NO BRAIDED HOOKLENGTHS
Maintenance teams continue to find abandoned rigs – particularly at Decoy, Wildings and Oldmans – which break these rules. If you’re caught you will be banned.
Right on to the rest of the News.
Maintenance West
The aerator at Badgers Wood has been repaired but we’re not able to remove the Norfolk reeds as planned until the birds have ceased nesting. We’re also looking at giving the hedges at Badgers a haircut in the not too distant future.
Swims at Cemetery Wood have been strimmed but there are still some branches on the Wineham stretch that need looking at with a view to cutting them back.
Loads of reeds have been removed at George Cragg.
Maintenance East
The causeway at Wildings has been repaired and the track down to the lake is currently open; the water level is back up to normal. We’re aware of mink sitings at Decoy and traps will be set and monitored.
Vacancies on the Committee
We still have the following vacancies which need filling with some urgency. If you’d like to help ensure the smooth running of the club, we need your help now.
Treasurer
The Club is seeking a trustworthy and organised Treasurer to manage our finances. The role includes keeping track of incomings and outgoings, paying invoices, keeping accurate financial records, managing the bank account, and preparing simple reports for committee meetings and the annual general meeting. You will help ensure funds are used responsibly for fisheries, stocking, equipment, and events. The Treasurer also works closely with other officers to support budgeting and future planning. This is a vital role for anyone with basic financial skills who wants to contribute to the success and stability of a friendly fishing club. To apply you must have been a club member for at least two years.
Match Secretary
We are looking for a reliable and organised Match Secretary to run our club’s competitive fishing programme. The role involves planning and scheduling matches, booking venues, preparing peg lists, collecting entry fees, recording results, and publishing league tables. You will also liaise with anglers, fisheries, and the club committee to ensure events run smoothly and fairly. On match days, you will help coordinate draws, handle any issues, and make sure rules are followed. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys match fishing and wants to play an active role in club life.
Club Secretary
Hassocks Angling is looking for an organised and enthusiastic Club Secretary to support the day-to-day running of the club. Duties include handling correspondence and emails, preparing meeting agendas and minutes, keeping membership records up to date, and assisting the committee with organising events, matches, and work parties. The Secretary will also help share information with members through notices and regular newsletters, and maintain important club documents. This is a key role for someone who enjoys administration, communication, and being actively involved in a friendly and well-run fishing club.
