Rivers opening soon

You will all be aware the rivers open for fishing on 16 June so a polite reminder. The stretch of the Adur at Cemetery Wood is deceptively deep and drops off immediately so please take care and if at all possible consider wearing a life jacket.

To make things easier for our members the maintenance team went to Cemetery Wood last week. It was quite a battle as the local rain and sunshine meant that the grass and nettles were over waist high but by the end of the morning we had created 15 swims with a further 5 upstream from the weir. We also cleared the access to the “Free” Stretch upstream from the Bridge at Wineham. It looked really inviting so good luck and don’t forget to send in photos of your catches.

Maintenance

At the moment strimming seems to be taking up a lot of our time and if there are any gardeners out there you will know that everything is growing double quick. Despite this the waters are looking good and we have still had time to fix the bridge at Masons and clear more reeds from Badgers Wood and George Cragg.

Badgers Wood Training Day

The second Training Day was l held on 11th June and once again there was a good turnout with 32 attending on the day. The new equipment we have received as a result of the Grant from the Angling Trust certainly did its job with tench, roach, bream and perch all caught on the day.

One of the tutors caught what he thought was a gudgeon but on closer inspection it turned out to be a small barbel. This is interesting as this is the second small barbel that has reported to us in the last month. As the last stocking of barbel was in December 2019 either there are a couple of “runts” in the batch we stocked or they have started breeding. We were advised that this couldn’t happen because barbel need flowing water but you never know. If anyone does catch another could you please take a photo and send to the club website.

That's not a gudgeon - it's a tiny barbel

This is one that we stocked in 2019 so you can see they could be confused with a gudgeon.

That is it for this month. Full details of catches are on the website so keep sending in the photos.
