Brief description of fishery:
Located in Hamsey just north of Lewes, this prolific stretch has a weir midway. Below the weir is completely tidal, above is partly tidal only being affected by tides of 5.7 and above. All river species are present notably some large carp and Bream mainly around the weir and a seasonal run of large grey mullet.To measure the tide, reference Newhaven plus roughly two hours.
NIGHT FISHING: Night fishing is permitted but ONLY from October 1st to March 14th (the end of the river season).
Location & Access
Members are requested not to park in the campsite car park. The parking corral which is clearly signposted was set up following damage to members’ cars by livestock in the fields and we would recommend members use the corral. If members wish to park outside the corral they do so at their own risk. The main entrance has a padlock (see the back of your membership card for the PIN number).
Access to all parts of the river is across fields which can be very uneven. There are cows in the fields during spring and summer, with calves in the spring so don’t get too close. They often take an interest in any cars parked in their field by licking and rubbing against them. If your car is covered in cowlick, mud, and scratches when you return to it, remember cars are parked at owners’ own risk.
The river is deep and can have a strong flow as the tide goes out. The banks are quite high and steep in places. Risk of flooding.
